Born from playful experimentation with vintage lighting components, APPARATUS is the creative collaboration of Gabriel Hendifar and Jeremy Anderson. Aged brass, painted glass, and found objects are assembled by hand to create eclectic, utilitarian fixtures. The result is a warm glow that is at once time-worn yet undoubtedly modern.

Gabriel Hendifar is a unique creative, in that he straddles between fashion and interior disciplines. He has designed for couture label JMary and is now part of the Raquel Allegra creative team. His interior design work has been photographed for Elle Decor and can be seen at gabrielhendifar.com.

D.B. Kim, Associate Principal at PYR, designed this Swan chair for Swarovski as part of The Pink Swan Project to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

His Inspiration:

“My design inspirations are from the patterns of healing power: radiating lines and beautiful rays from the Swarovski crystals. The sensual and organic form of the Swan chair transforms as a perfect canvas for the pattern and crystals. I would like to thank Swarovski team for their support and the opportunity.”

This one-of-a-kind chair will be auctioned to benefit BCRF on charitybuzz.com.

Auction runs October 1–31, 2011.

Showcase: Pasadena & Paul Williams

"The Banquet Room"

(Above: A never-before-seen Fuse Lighting chandelier makes the showcase house feel more like a treasure hunt.)

It’s that time of the year again, to check out all of the design eye candy at the Pasadena Showcase House. One of the oldest and largest house & garden tours, the showcase is in its 47th year.  This year’s house, a 1927 Paul R. Williams in La Canada, (LAX Theme Building, Beverly Hills Hotel, Saks Beverly Hills) is as important as Los Angeles, historic architecture gets! The show is running through May 15th.

A big thank you to my friend, designer David Dalton, for taking me on a guided tour.  Be sure to check out David’s design of “The Great Room,” which is filled with a healthy dose of oversized glazed floral chintz, a lively palette of geranium red, carnation pink and marigold orange, not to mention textured fresh whites anchoring the color scheme while black lacquer elements lend a certain polish to the décor.  In other words, the fabulousity level in this room is off the charts!

“The pieces in this show,” Shladovsky says, “reveal the evolution of my relationship with the forces of nature, mainly those I cannot control.”

Ruth Bachofner Gallery (@ Bergamot Station Art Center, Los Angeles) is pleased to present, Living with Art, a premier exhibition of work by interior designer and artist, Azadeh (Azie) Shladovsky, March 19 – April 16, with an opening reception on Saturday, March 19, 5-7 PM.

Founder of LA based multidisciplinary, AAS Design Studio, Azadeh Shladovsky, introduces a limited-edition, sculptural furniture collection, Living with Art. This collection explores Shladovsky’s unique relationship with nature and highlights her ability to create powerful expressions that are as beautiful as they are functional. Her perspective is informed by and, to a degree, controlled by the forces inherent in her wood medium. In her work, Shladovsky uses nature and its processes as a guide, both in how each piece is formed and how it is perceived. “The pieces in this show,” Shladovsky says, “reveal the evolution of my relationship with the forces of nature, mainly those I cannot control.”  Just as nature influences our human experiences, our experiences also change the way we see and interpret the natural world. These pieces are meant to provoke a dynamic sensory experience and engage the subject in a dialogue that struggles with questions of tension, control and peace.

Models, Mortals & Magni

Celebrating 15 years of the Magni Home Collection, James Magni continues his company’s passion for balancing timeless craftsmanship with edginess that challenges convention with the Amsterdam Collection.  With these new pieces, you truly get a sense of Magni’s background as a sculptor. The skeletal, mortal and even alien quality of the Amsterdam pieces fit perfectly with Rick Owens’ S/S 11 Collection, reconfirming Magni’s fashion-forward aesthetic.  Even the color palette of these new pieces have a certain harmony with Owens’ looks for Spring/Summer.

I can’t wait to get a closer look at these pieces when the Magni Home Collection enters the coveted Thomas Lavin showroom at the PDC in March, 2011.

Always a fan,

Sean

News, News, News: Voila!

Voila! Gallery’s collection of curiosities are a surrealist dream-come-true. Not only do they have new arrivals of their chic oddities in this week, but they’re also having a special sales event on One Kings Lane now!

So many amazing objet’s, but I think my favorite item is the timely “Black Swan” skeleton.

Look out for a new book by Chronicle on Voila!’s collection of vintage educational charts in September, too. There will be around 150 large scale images of botanical and zoological charts in all their richness.

Best,

Sean

SIGLO MODERNO UNVEILS, MARCH 2011

The Siglo Moderno showroom is the newest kid on the famed Melrose block, with a fabulous space nicely nestled between Alexander McQueen and Bisazza Tiles. Officially opening their doors to the public in March, designer and founder Jorge L. Cruzata expresses his delight with the new space, “Fashion has always had a heavy influence on me when designing interiors, specifically the fashion of the late Alexander McQueen [...] Spaces I design, evoke an effortless, timeless, sexiness in the same way that his collections did.”

Jorge curates his showroom with a sophisticated coverage of iconic vintage designs, contemporary designs and the in house collection: S+M. The current vintage focus is on iconic 70’s Italian designs by designers such as Tobia Scarpa, Mario Bellini, and Gaetano Pesce. The current contemporary focus is on 70’s Glamour designs by designers such as Carlo Colombo, Kemistry of Style and Fredrikson Stallard. The in-house collection, S+M Furniture is currently featuring extraordinary Saddle Collar Mirrors from actual horse collars which have been repurposed.

Siglo Moderno’s defined vision comes from the synthesis of modernity and tradition. “Siglo Moderno is for those who, like me, relish in the romance, the nostalgia of decadent and modern design, yet flee the dangers of trends and prefer to maintain future relevance” says Cruzata.

KOZMA STYLE: FOLK DECO

(Pair of Rounded Cane-Back chairs, by Lajos Kozma: The recognizable bentwood design and old world caning method are quintessentially Kozma Deco.)

(Walnut Secretary with Starburst Inlay, by Lajos Kozma : The rounded corners, simplified lines and veneers with geometric shapes express the stylistic development from deco to Modernism.)

Images | Szalon Antiques

The pre-eminent architect and designer of 20th century Hungarian Modernism, Lajos Kozma, was known for his distinctive deco style, inflected with abstract, indigenous folk motifs and nature-inspired themes. Predominately working with luxurious woods and employing old world methods such as the elaborate marquetry of local artisans in Budapest, Kozma’s deco explored a native influence that was unlike the French and American counterparts. Often treating woods with polishes rather than lacquers, and opting to use natural elements in an era that celebrated the Machine Age, Kozma straddled the generations and perplexed his contemporaries with nature-loving forms rather than through the explicit use of man-made materials.

At Szalon Antiques in the famed La Cienega Design Quarter, their collection of Kozma Deco exhibits the works and themes of a designer who has been considered on par with Frank Lloyd Wright, and whom others have hailed as the Renaissance man of his era. As contemporary design moves more and more toward a green lifestyle,
a rediscovery of the nature-inspired themes of Kozma Deco may make for a unique, modern living space.
